CAPE Convergence: A Year of Reimagining Social Community and Building Connection to Hold a Virtual Exhibition via Zoom on Tuesday, February 22, 2022

CAPE Convergence is an annual exhibition of CPS students’ arts-integrated projects

Chicago, IL — CAPE Convergence: A Year of Reimagining Social Community and Building Connection is an exhibition that is a collection of artworks by K-12 students from 40 classrooms across Chicago Public Schools. Teachers and teaching artists begin the year formulating inquiry questions that form the investigative arc for their curriculum—these questions set in motion student engagement through art-making to explore and expand academic content learning. By creating original artworks, students connect academics and the environment outside the classroom.

The event will be led by Associate Director of Education Mark Diaz and our Program Coordinator,  Brandon Phouybanhdyt from CAPE. ACRE guest curator, Josh Rios will co-facilitate the conversation.

CAPE Convergence is made possible through donations by Laird Norton Family Foundation, Illinois Arts Council Agency, Polk Bros. Foundations, and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Thanks to these organizations, we offer our teaching artists mentorship and materials to all A/RP classrooms at no cost to our school’s partners.

Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) inspires over 5,000 students from more than 50 city and suburban high-need public schools to be more passionate about and engaged in their education.  CAPE teaching artists partner with teachers who weave together the arts and academics through original, creative lesson plans beyond traditional pencil and paper teaching strategies.  These lessons integrate music, dance, drama, digital art, video, and photography into classrooms. They also expand learning beyond school walls into community sites like art studios, performance halls, and exhibit spaces. Commissioned, long-term research shows their unique approach to art-based education continually improves students’ grades, critical thinking, self-esteem, and confidence.  For more information, please visit www.CAPEchicago.org.
