We’re sending a group of educators and students from North-Grand High School to this summer’s Allied Media Conference in Detroit! During the four-day conference, our CAPE students and their teachers and teaching artists will be inspired by peers and leaders from the fields of art, education, technology, and activism, and will learn new ways to engage and transform their Humboldt Park and Chicago communities once they return home.

Please show your support for this team by helping to make their journey the best it can be! We’re raising $3400 to cover all of their expenses and ensure they can make the most of their time in the Motor City with added visits to artists’ studios and museums.  Then they’ll return home ready to dive in and make a difference in Humboldt Park and their larger Chicago community!

Make a gift below and read on to learn more about the trip, the students and educators involved, and a new partnership with BAMM! that is helping to kickstart our fundraising!

The Experience

A group of dedicated teachers, teaching artists, and six students in CAPE’s after-school program at North-Grand High School have been creating art and performances that engage their community and address topics relevant to the school’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. (Some of these students were recently featured on WBEZ, our local National Public Radio affiliate, discussing their work!)

To gain a new perspective on the value of their work and to learn new tools and strategies for community engagement and art making, a team of teachers, teaching artists, and students will travel to Detroit to attend the Allied Media Conference this June. The goal of the trip is to learn how other students and educators from around the country use various media and technologies to transform their communities through the arts. For some extra inspiration, he NGHS group will also visit innovative sites around Detroit, including urban farms, artist cooperatives, and community social service organizations.

We’ll be documenting their journey from start to finish, including when the students share their experiences with their North-Grand peers in the new school year.
